On top of my other thread about #
AI today, I was reminded by a friend of this phenomenon of " AI psychosis". I admit that, even as someone whose career is (hopefully 'was') in mental health, I've avoided reading at all on the subject. This is because I know that, in other circumstances, I probably would have become one of those people. I really loved the idea that the capacity for language could be built entirely off of pattern-seeking neural networks, even as a kid. Seventeen year old me loved chatbots. And if ChatGPT had been presented in a way that wasn't "We're using this to replace jobs and steal artwork, and also we're now the leading single cause of global warming", I would have been all over it, and likely become (even more) deeply mentally unwell because of it.
