To understand reactionaries, one just needs to consider how they must feel. How nice it must be to imagine that you — yes, you! — are the best sort of human. You were born as the majority ethnicity in the greatest country on earth. And that country isn't destroying the world; in fact, the world isn't ending at all. Climate change isn't real. Nothing bad will happen to you or your children, unless the Bad Guys — people who aren't you, who are a weak minority in society — get power.
It's only once you're trapped in this nice little fantasy that they add onto this: Actually, that minority is gaining power. They're a threat. But it's okay: All you have to do to prevent that is keep doing what you're doing: Keep misunderstanding them. Keep misrepresenting them. Keep hating them. Keep them down. It's easy, because sure, they're dangerous and could destroy everything you love, but also, they're weak. But they're getting stronger. Stronger still, and you can't comprehend them, you can only know that this bizarre, perverted minority is threatening you, so you must fear them. This fear becomes a natural part of the misunderstanding, misrepresentation, and hatred. The moment you stop doing these things, they have won, and that perfect fantasy you hold dear will be destroyed forever.
It's a terrifying existence.
