Mastodon might be threatened in some ways (starting with how most if not all Mastodon instances are hosted in NA or the EU, which are now going through ID verification laws and potential Chat Control) and that one should keep an eye on both alternative networking protocols - the clearnet may no longer be seemingly "friendly" for long - and existing or future forks (such as, in Mastodon's case, Hometown) or on alternatives - such as Hubzilla and (streams), which feature nomadic identity, a very useful thing that should have become by now default across ActivityPub...
The fediverse is still WIP, but it's the work of the people who develop/use it (indeed, it takes a bit of work to properly use Hubzilla, but in general we shouldn't be so passive anymore, especially if we're going to make a revolution), not of the big corpo.
