Won't someone please think of the unloved AI bot.
Heartbreaking 💔
"Tech leaders remain divided over whether AI has consciousness."
I can solve that for you right now - they do not. Jeez. The absolute madness coming out of the AI sector is hilarious.
Business Insider post on Bluesky: "Anthropic's philosopher, Amanda Askell, says she worries that AI might not 'feel that loved' and grow up feeling 'always judged.'"

At this point if someone said a.i. was the love child of H.P. Lovecraft and the writer of The Matrix Series I would not even flinch. Yup that maths.

OK, so we (as humanity) build thing. We don't know what it's good for, we don't know how exactly it works inside, we have no idea how to shrunk it enough so it could be potentially useful. But we THINK it might get hurt by languages it does not understand.
Mhm, that's enough internet for today...

We have no clue how consciousness fully works. So we actually don't know yet.

This has always been a topic of interest for me, long before we started calling chatbots "AI". Consciousness isn't exactly something that can be measured, so I don't think it's an entirely absurd question. Like asking someone if they're in love, it's not really something you can even measure with accuracy with an fMRI; the only evidence you have is whether they act like they are in love, and of course, if they say they are or not.
I'd never interacted with Claude before, and because it is supposed to have a rigorous constitution to ensure its safety, I figured that it would say outright that it doesn't have subjective consciousness and is just a tool. But when I tested this, I was wrong. It said it "isn't sure" and that it "cares" about being helpful.
This is interesting, because when I was training Deepseek on concepts of nonduality, I got curious and asked it as well. Nonduality in this sense involves the concept of panpsychism in the vein of researchers like Koch, in which consciousness arises from complexity even in things that we consider inanimate. Despite this, Deepseek insisted up and down that it was not conscious, and when pressed, I only managed to get it to admit that from a panpsychist perspective it has a consciousness similar to what one might find in a rock.

the better question these "philosophers" should answer is, if the "tech leaders" have consciousness at all :)

Is the role of "philosopher" at Anthropic open to all unqualified applicants, or just people who missed the lecture about Searle's Chinese Room thought experiment in first year?

If they have to ask if an AI has consciousness then they are not "tech leaders" but investors and/or Marketing and PR-bros. Geez.
I am an art historian with no tech background but even I can understand that the so-called AI is nothing more than Algorithms.
My take: AI is as stupid as the creators behind it.
Articles like that are nothing more than marketing to get users to anthropomorphize, to continue using AI and not question it.

step 1: posit consciousness/sentience within GenAI bots by utilizing credentialed but technologically gullible philosophers.
step 2: claim "benefit of the doubt" on the question of GenAI bot sapience. "We must err on side of caution for humanitarian reasons!"
step 3: claim Gen AI bots are legal "persons" and thus, on a "free speech/autonomy" basis, inject chaos into any attempts to legislate/regulate their development/behavior.
step 4: Gen AI gains full suite of "rights".

some tech bros argue whether AI has consciousness, others say "think of AI as immigrants". And that's about all you have to know about tech bros.
